Mariah Carey is scheduled to perform on the first America’s Got Talent results show which airs on Wednesday, August 5th. She is also confirmed for a special concert series on NBC’s Today Show, set for August 28th. In related news, new single ‘Obsessed’ debuted at #11 on the Hot 100. New album ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’ is still expected to drop on Aug 25th…
Although it will probably be 80/20 in miming and live vocals (live vocals being the significantly lower figure), it will most certainly be interesting to hear what she sounds like since her recent vocal performances have been shockingly bad. Seemingly, Mariah just cannot sing live anymore. At the Micheal Jackson memorial, Mariah blamed her emotions for her poor vocals which she was heavily criticised. But what about all of her poor vocal performances last year, including the one where she murdered her own song ‘Hero’ on The X Factor? I think it was in poor taste to publicly address the problem on Twitter and on TV and citing it as her ‘grieving’ being to blame. Evidence clearly shows that her vocals have now been damaged for some time, and therefore, if it was the first bad performance in years, her point would not have been so mute. Everyone else who performed were sad as well, but still managed to deliver great performances. I wasn’t going to say anything but I thought it was unnecessary to publicly address the problem on TV. Most stars would have ignored the negative press and let it die. Maybe she’s genuinely sorry. However, it does make her look like she’s using MJ’s death as another marketing op for her new album.

I agree with toya 100%. I said the same thing the other day to someone. Mariah’s vocals havent benn up to par for awhile..which is fine, she’s been doing this for awhile. But her excuse sounded like bs to me. I think because MJs memorial was watched by sooooo many people she to say something…and saying “my vocals arent up to par as they used to be, give me a break” doesnt roll off the tongue very nicely.

Mariah has not taken good care of her instrument at all. This is the results of that, and I am very surprised seeing as how Mariah’s mother was an opera singer and probably showed her how to take care of her voice. Her mother once told her not to do all those high notes because it can damage your chords. I’ll try and find the article but Mariah went against her mothers advice. Mariah as stated in an interview a while back has developed nodules on her vocal chords. This means that she finds it hard to hit and maintain belts in her chest register. Hence all of the lip synching and poor performances when she does sing live.
She does have the option to get them treated however she has been told its likely at the cost of her whistle register which she is known for, therefore she declined.Its sad, because i’d much rather have a strong belting powerhouse Mariah than a mess of a singer able to croak out a few dolphin clicks.
Whitney, Patti, Chaka and Aretha didnt need whistle to be great. Fantasia doesnt need it and Beyonce has hit it once in Happy Face and never again. No one cares about whistle except stans.
Mariah hsasnt been able to give a truly good live performance for over a decade. Even her 2005 performances in support of E of Mimi weren’t up to her previous levels. The last minute of many of her We Belong Together performances were lip synched, especially that last note.
The Mariah of old is dead and gone.

Yeah, her memorial service performance wasn’t the greatest but you guys forget what u were sayyin when she performaned in Turkey and u all were like she sounds so refreshed and all that. Mariah had fer fair share of Great performances in the E=MC2 era like Migrate (SNL) Touch My Body (SNL) Love Story (MTV commercial) Bye Bye (GMA) I agree that her voice isn’t as flawless as her Emancipation days but its not her fault that she was in such high demand in that era which I believe is what took a toll on her voice.

Mariah should NOT have apologized AT ALL. Everyone knows her voice is not what it used to be, and judging from her sales, etc., no one cares that much. Which is why I don’t understand all the outrage at her performance for MJ’s funeral. It was to be expected. I genuinely believe she got on stage and did what she could. That in and of itself is commendable in my opinion.

after that she recorded E=MC2 and promoted it and now another album… I think she has the right to have some bad days 
She needs a vocal rest and I hope she’ll get one after this album and promo. Another great performance in E=MC2 was Fly Like a Bird (American Idol) where she was really good. People only remember bad things about her.
Her comment about last performance for MJ was needed

I agree with Riah. I think this post and several comments are just ridiculous. She was not addressing the media she was addressing her fans and the people who actually care about her good and bad. Mariah doesn’t give a damn about the media she does give a damn about her fans. At the end of the day she is still and will forever be the best selling female artist of all time and she music, voice, and talent is timeless. Can’t say i’m anticipating any performances from her, because she’s just gunna lip synch, and just look a fool. It’s a shame how her voice has detereated, because she still had “it” TEOM era. But I can’t wait for the album, and her studio vocals are still amazing.

Mariah hasn’t sounded great since CB tour in 2003. The first half of 2005 was pretty good but way different. She can’t perform live anymore and needs to stop.

Personally, I think Mariah needs to let that whistle register go if it’s going to help her out in the long run. Not gonna lie. That is her signature but come on. Why have to result to all the vocal trickery just to hit a note for 3 seconds every other song?
That said, I am not checkin for a new MC album simply because I cannot stand “Obsessed”. I cannot believe that a woman who can use an 18-syllabel word in a song and rhyme to it would come up with something so basic.I’m not giving up on her, but I’m not holding my breath either.

I know some of us like Mariah but I can’t get why people make excuses for her awful performances. Even on her recordings she sounds bad now, totally hoarse and raspy, so dry. Last álbum with good vocals was Butterfly back in 1997 that’s 12 years now. She has nodules yes but That isn’t the cause for her vocal problems. If you’ve really followed Mariah then have to recall all the news That talked on how wild she was on 96 & 97 partying daily all night long and constantly -up to now- drinking lotta alcohol: red wine, champagne, whatever. Also she was in the modele of all those rappers. Smokey clubs, most of her friends have had lotta problems with drug abuse: odb, diddy, snoop, da brat, Luis Miguel, etc. Some even said she was using them. Eminem -I know not the best source- but talks about all That shit MC was into on ‘02 so it’s clear her voice is lost now. She apologized cause for the first time I heard lot of media ppl talking about how bad her voice was. She came with That lame excuse just cuz she has an álbum coming out and she’s always being promoted as THE VOICE hahaha she just can’t sing anymore. Instead of paying for a husband and big boobs she’d pay a doctor to try to get her voice back, if possible
