KERI HILSON: ‘IN A PERFECT WORLD…’ [ALBUM REVIEW]…

Posted by Toya on March 24, 2009

Update: Ooooh, I don’t know what I was on last night but here’s a correction. It’s not T-Pain on ‘Change Me’. It is actually Akon. But my opinion is still the same. I dislike BOTH T-Pain and Akon EQUALLY, which is why I probably got confused.

KERI HILSON: IN A PERFECT WORLD... [ALBUM REVIEW]...

KERI HILSON: IN A PERFECT WORLD... [ALBUM REVIEW]...After almost a two-year wait, Keri Hilson - the critically acclaimed songwriter - responsible for penning hits for the likes of Britney Spears, Ciara, Usher, Chris Brown, Omarion, Danity Kane and many others - released her debut album ‘In A Perfect World…’ this week. It’s been a struggle for the 26-year-old to make the transition from unseen songwriter to forefront artist but she finally got there in the end. When her producer and mentor Timbaland released the Keri-assisted ‘The Way I Are’ in 2007, the song topped the charts internationally, and it seemed like the perfect time to capitalize on the exposure. However, it was an opportunity that went ignored unfortunately, resulting in many uncalled for album delays. Still, with strong backing and support from heavyweights like Tim, Danja and Polow Da Don, Keri’s album has finally become a reality. Sure, it took forever and a day but at least a nearby retail record store finally got a whiff…

The album’s intro prepares the listener for an enjoyable musical journey of bass heavy whimsical up-tempos, synth-driven head nodders, and sultry R&B mid-tempo and slow numbers. Ms Hilson strives to inform us that she’s “about to get it poppin”, and this is just before the album presses straight ahead with the hip-hop tinged ‘Turnin’ Me On’, where she indulges a combination of Nelly-style rap-singing. The track features popular man-in-demand Lil’ Wayne, which sees Keri sternly warning a man not to get too cocky as there are things about him that can turn her on just as much as off. As the song has hordes of swagger, it unexpectedly became a top 20 hit despite it’s lack of crossover appeal. However, the beat is quite contagious and having one-million week seller Wayne on the song was all the more an added bonus.

The Keyshia Cole/Trina-assisted women’s anthem ‘Get Your Money Up’ is not the best song on the album by a long shot, and Keyshia’s subpar vocal delivery was practically fighting with the busy arrangement. But as a feminist I can tolerate it and knowing that the fellas will somewhat hate the track is all the more reason to appreciate it. In fact, somewhere down the line, I think the kinetic clap-and-bounce number could even be a future single. And as we’re on singles, leading single ‘Energy’ was a commercial failure apparently. On the light but etremely generic midtempo cut, the singer confronts feelings from a failed relationship: “I wish I could rip out a page of my memory” she sings frustratingly “cos I put too much energy in him and me”. Sadly, many of us know that feeling all too well. ‘Return The Favor’ with Timbaland was the official second single and sounded much more promising in contrast to the lead single. I took to it straight away but the song recieved little promotion and it just tailed off. The 30-second silence at the end sort of messes up the flow, which annoyed me to no end but it’s a good job a strong follow-up track got the ball rolling again.

After the lenghty silence, the album presses ahead with latest single ‘Knock You Down’, which features Kanye West & Ne-yo. I am quite relieved the song became an eventual single and it’s really unique and versatile from the rest of the album. And for once I was feeling like this was a Keri joint not derived from another artist. Though, the song would definetely have faired better if Ne-yo was the only one featured on the song. I didn’t particularly care for Kanye’s verses. Very irrelevant. ‘Slow Dance’ is very much Prince-influenced with it’s oldskool production. I remember when this song leaked a while back and when I reviewed the song back then, I said it sounded a lot like Ciara’s ‘Promise’ and my opinion remains the same. It’s dark and moody but sexy, and vocally, Keri pulls it off rather well. The beat to ‘Make Love’ is sweetly pleasant but sounds too much like Alicia’s ‘Like You’ll Never See Me Again’. It’s definetely one for the bedroom blues as Keri seductively croons about getting passionate. I particularly enjoyed the Middle Eastern arrangement on ‘Intuition’, which is a musical progression that could be heard in some of his earlier work with the late Aaliyah. The revengeful ‘How Does It Feel’ also knocks hard with its percussive kicks and hypnotic synthetized strings.

The bittersweet uptempo ‘Alienated’ also provides a nicely driven touch to the album but the same can’t be said for tracks like the T-Pain-assisted ‘Change Me’ or the midtempo joint ‘Where Did He Go’, which is just well, really old. The production is bland and very generic-sounding. These are two songs that I never particularly cared for or maybe it’s because with the exception of few songs, they automatically become garbaged when T-Pain’s trademark autotuned vocals hit the beat. I’ll always hate this man for making a mockery out of the music industry and for hypnotising even the most talented of artists into jumping on the autotune bandwagon. Last but certainly not least, the regretful ‘Tell Him The Truth’ has Keri itching to let out a personal confession that could ruin her relationship: “If you ever kept a secret from the one you love, this is what it feels like” and easily one of the standout tracks with it’s laidback moody arrangements.

So, to summarise the album, it wasn’t anything innovative. The beats were hot but you couldn’t help but feel you were listening to other artists. As stated, Slow Dance is reminiscent to Ciara’s ‘Promise’, Energy is reminiscent to Jordin Spark’s ‘No Air’, Make Love is reminiscent to the aforementioned Alicia Keys song and I can go on and on. With nearly every track, you heard another similar version previously. She can definetely hold a note and its appreciated that she’s aware she’s no Beyonce and tries not to sing outside her range like some artists do and end up sounding horrible in the process. There are so many better songs that leaked previously that didn’t make the cut. I’m sure many of us who actually sat down and listened to the album often asked, why didn’t such and such a track make the album? Why did they include this garbage when there are better tracks that leaked previously that could have made the cut? It becomes a musical pick ‘n’ mix. Instead of choosing our desired mix of sweets when we were kids, I’m sure we had an idea in our heads as to what sort of songs we would have chosen for this album (there have been sooo many we are practically spoilt for choice) and whose to say we can’t make our own Keri Hilson album and erase the songs we don’t care for? Overall, not bad for a debut but not thrilling or remotedly classic. It was just solid, but if she never gets a second album, her talent lies in penning hits for other artists so she’ll always have a job regardless.

Standouts: Knock You Down, Slow Dance, Make Love, How Does It Feel, Intuition, Alienated & Tell Him The Truth.

Rating: 3/5

  2. Chana aka Georgia's Finest229 Says:

I have to agree with your standouts and “make love” has to be my favorite track. i would say a second is “tell him the truth”. i neva understood why ppl weren’t feelin’ “energy” because I thought that was a pretty nice song. Maybe that was because I was going thru a similar situation at the time. But overall the album was alright. Nothing spectacular. But I do think that Ms. Keri (Baby) has a nice voice.

“Make love” “Quicksand” and “Intuition” are my favs from the album. It’s a good album over all. But I think pl were expecting alot more from her since she is a writer and she has written some GREAT hits for others. I’ll give it 3.5/5. Because she is showing thst she wants to have longevity in this buisness and this is a good start for her.

Good review Toya, nice to see them back!

Have to agree with you on most of it, a lot of the songs have a real swagga about them but considering she has timbaland on board I was expecting just that little bit more. Its nice to see Return the favour getting some play on the music channels in the UK, give her a chance at some international fame a la Pink.

My favourite track by far is How does it feel, props for mentioning that in your standouts, I’ve had that on repeat driving into work the past two days. LOVE her songwriting on it; “what about the other chick, thought you was kickin it wit and i’m gettin sick of it,
damn it it’s a shame, a sin, you about to get a dose of your medicine.” Also, think its the first time I’ve heard someone sing ‘take the knuckle-route’ - love it!

Hope the album gets her a top ten, even if that won’t be enough to guarentee another album its something nice for her to have for her hard work

i really hope that this album does well. I went to the store today to get a copy but it was sold out…which is a good thing. i will try again tomorrow

    I’d give atleast a 4/5, maybe 4.5/5.

My favorites of the album are How Does It Feel, Intuition, Where Did He Go, Make Love, Knock You Down and Alienated.

You gotta check out the bonus track Do It too Toya, it’s really good.

I’m gonna pick up the album tomorrow at Target.

I agree with Toya completly. Hot beats, but no originality or lasting appeal.

it really is a solid album, i’ve awaited this cd for years & finally have it. Since i’ve heard more than half the album much wasnt too new for me. I love tell him the truth, thats true r&b with soul. I expected a stellar album, but it’s decent, like every song….

After listening to it a few times, I’d give it a 3 too Toya. After a while it sounds repetitive. I agree with the stand-outs too, but I’d add “Energy”

  14. bella Says:

    FLOP.
there’s only 4 good songs. sux for her.

  15. No Gravatar Says:

THe album does become repetitive. I don’t know how she will do sale wise being that Best Buy who is home to the most album sales for their new release price is not carrying her album, there are tons of retailers not carrying the album.

I am excited she just got a physical album on the shelf….Why didn’t I hear “Hey Girl” on the album. That was going to make me actually run to buy the album. Now I will just strut

  16. ttttt Says:

just had to come here and say Toya, you nailed it with this review. same with The-Dream.

  17. Jessica Says:

    LOOL Bella!

  18. YESMAMNo Gravatar Says:

Of course the album’s songs would sound similar if she wrote a lot of the hits you been hearing for the past few years.

Another thing Toya, please check the credits hoe before writing a review, T-pain is not on the album, I see you got a free download.

This album is great start to finish, not her fault folks downloaded the leaked tracks.

And the album is great lyrically, please learn to write a review and just don’t judge based off of beats and production similarities between artists from present and past.

    #3 on itunes hoes!!!!!!!!

  20. AubreyNo Gravatar Says:

    Toya,

I agree with u wholeheartedly - 3/5. For me How does it Feel is the song that really got me goin with that cd (though i do like alienated, tell him the truth, knock u down, and make love) such a shame she had some great potential. Am I the only one pissed “come clean” was left out of the album? That song is the BEST Keri song I have heard (nice arragements and adlibbing)…She shot herself in the foot though with ENERGY, it sucked, and was unworthy as a first single and tuned alot of people off to her….

  21. Face (heartAKeys!)No Gravatar Says:

    @eat the cake anna mae

once again who are you?

I think the album deserves a 3.5. it was good, but nothing spectacular as you said, T. I don’t think its sounds repetitive personally tho. I will definitely disagree and say those songs Energy, Make Love and Slow Dance sounds nothing like those songs you compared it too.

SD has the similar syrupy production to promise but the vibe is totally different. ML has those synthesized piano notes like alicia’s track but the big difference? keri’s song is fully computerized and also, alicia’s track sounds similar to prince’s Adore.

overall, I enjoyed keri. I will pick up her album, not in a couple weeks.

  22. Face (heartAKeys!)No Gravatar Says:

*not now tho, in a couple weeks.

And as far as her not having vocals?????WTF is wrong with you have you heard her sing?????

Enuff comparisopn Beyonce likes Keri very much and she is going to be dancing to turning me on oon her I am tour so please…….

And make love sounds nuthin like AK’s song what are listening to??????

  24. Hallie FanNo Gravatar Says:

i give her 120k…..in her first week

  25. MilekaNo Gravatar Says:

After reading some of the comments, I had no choice but to read that assignment, lol, to see what ppl were on about.
I disagree that the songs sound reminiscent of other artists. I think you have to listen to an album objectively, or else you will hear similarities. But the beats do sound typical of Timbaland in that the choruses repeat over and over, to the point where 1 track sounds like a repeat of the previous (that’s what I meant @ YESMAM).

  26. DeuceNo Gravatar Says:

well I disagree. I mean, I have my own issues with the album but they were VERY small issues, such as using the wrong version of “Turning Me On” on the cd, the 30 second silence after “Return The Favor” and using “Where Did He Go” since it’s HELLA old but this was as olid effort from her. It’s a breath of fresh air from all the crap that’s on the radio now from a beautiful and talented girl. I would’ve given it at LEAST 4 stars…and yes, I’m a loser and I bought 2 physical copies and one on itunes. MISS KERI BABY!!! :)

  27. JaNo Gravatar Says:

    No thanks.

  28. Chris Says:

Oooh I was expecting more from that review Toya! I would give it a 3.5 maybe 4/5. The album flows pretty up until Change mE (I DO NOT KNOW WTF they were thinking with that! Just like that “What’s Wrong” on J-Hud’s lp; completely awkward and erratic) I hate that song with a passion, not to mention the fact that they could’ve easily replaced it with Mic Check, btu thats a different situation. I felt it was a solid effort. I just wish the album ended with a better song, and I would have loved for Luv Ya to have been on there. Oh and give it a minute, but you will find that Intuition is a STANDOUT! That song will get STUCK in your head and you’ll find yourself humming the harmonious “its in my mind”…love that song.

  29. jj Says:

I’ve been looking forward to this almost for basically a decade haha and it really disappointed me. but, I love ENERGY one of my favorite songs last year

  43. Ms. BellaNo Gravatar Says:

 I like the album. I don’t care for the Akon track (the way you feel about T-Pain, I feel about him, he can mess up a track) Alienated is one of my fav. Of course Turning me on. I do like Get Ya Money Up. Trina jacked the song tho and not Key Key - and I have a serious attitude about Keyshia too…

But I like it. I thought it was different, and she did her thang. It’s a little electronica - but its def gonna be in my car this spring!

  44. ButterpeacanNo Gravatar Says:

REPETITIVE BLAND ALBUM AND HER PAPER THIN VOCALS DOESN’T HELP AT ALL.

  45. Ready2Speak Says:

Toya I love your reviews. As I listened to the album, which included bonus track Do It, I found myself saying, “vocally she is very reminiscent of Ciara with a damn vocoder.” I did not draw the same comparisons to other songs as you did, mainly because I’m realizing that today everything sounds like the next. The album lacked originality. As much as I hate to admit it, Beyonce is the only one that strives to go against the grain. Unfortunately for other artists she has set the bar so high that they are failing to meet the standards she has set fourth. I’m a guy and the lyrics to get your money up didn’t offend me. It sounded like a call for MEN to stop fronting and MAN UP…lol. Keyshia’s vocal were def subpar, but Trina’s rap was def on point. Listening to the album while lifting weights at the gym, I’d give it a solid 4 for Ms. Hilson’s debut.

  46. YESMAMNo Gravatar Says:

^^^you are full shit, Beyonce is not going against no grain she has never done anything that hasn’t been done before, she just has the fame. All I will say is that when both Ciara and Beyonce albums came out the reviews were not as good as Keri’s, google it! Just because you are a B and C stan don’t go hating on Keri, yall tired as hell.

  47. NGB is in DarknessNo Gravatar Says:

Yeah Beyonce is my favorite singer but she doesn’t go against the grain at all, she just really makes hot, popular songs. Although her latest cd was half different.

  48. NGB is in DarknessNo Gravatar Says:

Vocally Keri is much better than Ciara.

  49. KrissyNo Gravatar Says:

Actually there isn’t silence at the end of “Return the favor” The synths are still going very low.. That little instrumental breakdown is actually one of my favorite parts of the song.. It puts you in a trance..

But anyway, I def give it a 4.5/5.. amazing album! I got a lot of Aaliyah elements, as well as Brandy..

and as NGB said, Keri is way BETTER than Ciara vocally, and I am a ciara fan as well. It’s just plain as day. The most processed songs are “Turnin me on”, “Get your money up” and probably “Return the favor” .. Keri actually gives raw vocals most of the time!

  50. tldNo Gravatar Says:

    Good review Toya !

  54. NathanNo Gravatar Says:

    I’d give it a 3.5.

I think she should have left Energy and Return The Favor out, and left them as bonus tracks, because we all heard them like 6+ months ago.

There are tracks that I’m not fussed on, like Where Did He Go, and Tell Him The Truth. They’re just boring too me. And How Does It Feel just sounds samey.

The rest are all standouts for me. :)

  55. MiaNo Gravatar Says:

I’d give it a 2.5/5. It’s been a week and I’m already tired of listening to it. I skip over 4 of the tracks anyway.

I thought A was going to write this review?

  60. JPNo Gravatar Says:

I give the album 3.5/5. I think it was great. The only track i don’t really care for is Tell Him the Truth. But besides that I really liked it. And I liked the CD booklet pix. She did good. “Knock You Down” is bananers, but that’s cause of Kanye. “Intuition” was almost there, but it just missed it for me. Everything else is awful! I have my doubts as to whether she can carry a song on her own. Timbo, Lil’ Wayne, and possibly Ne-Yo and Kanye, are the only things keeping her afloat!

I say back to The Clutch for Keri!!!!

Glad you mentioned it, I was going to. Had a chance to listen to it through properly with some decent headphones and as usual with Timba tracks you finally get to hear the real deal. The instrumental at the end of return to favour is what is making me love that song, there isnt no damn 30 sec silence!

Brings me to an issue for another time. People listening to (and judging) music when they’re listening to it wrong. If you aint listening with good headphones (not the crappy in ear ones!) then you aint hearing half the stuff in there.

Preferred the album second time around, nothing original but some real bangers and love the girls swagga.

    3.5 for me.

  64. Anonymous Says:

This is why I am detoxifying my whole soul from R&B! I’m tired of these cookie cutter artist thinking that, because they have a pretty face, and something call swag, that they’re hot! I swear,… The kids coming up now, will be thinking that this shit is real music! WOW!! Keri you suck, I don’t even have to listen to her album to know that she sucks! She only hates on Beyonce so a bitch can utter the words out their mouth to say her name! This need to stop, I bet if people start boycotting these artist, I bet they will start changing their step, as to what the people have to hear! We control them, not them control us! If you stop letting these fake ass, untalented ass artist pump our radio waves with this bullshit call R&B, then we may have real music return! This is why everyday, I start listening to white artist, and shit from back in the day, cuz I GET SOOOOOOOOOOO MOTHERFUCKING TIRED OF THE ATL SOUND, THE VOCODER, JUST LAMES ASS SHIT!~ Fuck the music of the 2000’s thank you very fucing much R&B!you are offically the white mans bitch!

  66. TristanNo Gravatar Says:

The album was just decent . Nothing really spectacular. There were some tracks that I enjoyed here and there. I was really shocked and impressed by some of her vocal talent, because normally when your just used to hearing someone singing nothing but “crunk-influenced” tracks the first thing that comes to your mind is the beat , but she definitely had some sexy-laidback cuts. I also liked the fact that she stayed in her element vocal wise. Overall Ms. Hilson just gave a solid effort.

Standouts: Knock You Down Feat. Kanye West & Ne-Yo, Slow Dance, Make Love, Intuition, Alienated, & Tell Him The Truth

  67. BreezzyyNo Gravatar Says:

Alot of people hate on keri, and it’s truly a shame. This album basically gives me everything I want from an artist. the sexy(”Make Love”, “Slow Dance”, even “Knock You Down”) the raunchy (”Return The Favor”), the tracks I can relate to (”Intuition”, “”Alienated”) and the songs that attracted me to her before (”Where Did He Go”, “Energy”). I think she def came hard, especially for this to be a debut. Oh yeah, and I must say without Akon “Change Me” could’ve been perfect, I can tolerate it though. And I really hate comparing artists but I will say that if Rihanna was just a tad bit older, and chilled out with just focusing on trying to be a big international star, this would be the album she’d wished she had.

Sometimes its better for these artists to stay true to who they are, like I feel Keri is doing. Success will come, even if it takes a while. Afterall, Keri is highly talked about everyewhere now. I’ve been waiting for this album since summer 07, and it was def worth the wait.

My standouts: ALIENATED, INTUITION, Knock You Down, Energy, Make Love & Slow Dance
The Weakest: “Get your Money Up”
