![Britney Spears: Circus [album Review]... BRITNEY SPEARS: CIRCUS [ALBUM REVIEW]...](http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z76/toyabloggerj/ALBUMREV.jpg)
With the pop genius that was the VERY underrated ‘Blackout’ last year, Britney Spears is trying her hand at yet another musical comeback hoping for it to be much more successful than the last one. The Princess of Pop is back with her brand new album ‘Circus’, and although the album doesn’t drop until her 27th birthday (Dec 2nd), the project spilled it’s way onto the big bad Net this week. Britney worked with a high profile number of producers for the project which included the likes of Danja, The Outsyders, The Underdogs, Bloodshy & Avant, Jim Beanz, Kelly Claude, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Dr. Luke, Fernado Garibay, Greg Kurstin, Guy Sigsworth and the list is just endless.
The introductory track as well as the leading single ‘Womanizer’ is without a doubt, one of the worst songs on the album. It doesn’t even come close to some of the flawlessness Britney has put out previously (Gimme More, Slave 4 U, etc). Although the heavily synthesised techno-driven song doesn’t come close to her best work, it’s certainly doing its job on the charts and that’s the main principle. There are in fact songs on the album that clearly gives Womanizer a run for its money, such as ‘Kill The Rights’, ‘Circus’ and ‘Mannequinn’. I’d have chosen Circus because it would have made the perfect statement about the past two years of her chaotic life. The song certainly glistens with its infectious dance-stomping beat, catchily-engaging chorus and attitude-infused energy. Britney has yet to show us she can break out into a mean sweat like the early days. If she were to shut up the naysayers about her latest inability to perform, this would be the perfect song to do it with.
The Danja-produced Kill The Lights uses the producer’s voice-over announcement before declaring Britney as the “Queen of Pop” and roaring into an aggressive thumping sonically-driven beat. Lines such as “Is that money in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?” make the song even more compelling. Mannequin is just as contagious and dance-friendly with Britney using distinct-style vocals. Other upbeat pop stompers reside in the electro-driven ‘Shattered Glass’ and the euro-dance groove ‘Phonography’. The track ‘Blur’ which slightly reminds me of Rihanna’s Rehab is also a shining point. Having expressed my appreciation for Britney’s uptempo and rather addictive dance beats, I will say that I’ve never been a fan of Britney’s ballads. And unlike on the Blackout album, she appears to put extra focus on some of those slower-paced numbers like ‘My Baby’, ‘Out From Under’ and the Bloodshy & Avant-produced ‘Unusual You’, which reminded me very much of 90’s Dido.
Out From Under which is preoccupied by some guitar riffs, sees Britney covering the Joanna Pacitti original orchestrating her breathy vocals over the track and very surprisingly, not doing a bad job of it only proving that sometimes less is more. And in the coo-y ‘My Baby’, Britney softly croons sweet innocence in ode of her two children. Filler songs reside in the electronic guitar riffing of ‘Mmm Papi’ which was put together by Nicole Morier of Electrocute. ‘Rock Me In’, another electronic number from Morier, is also deserving of the filler envelope. I think Mmm Papi is a fun song but I just felt that production-wise, it was just irrelevant. As for ‘Lace & Leather’, it is straight 80’s-inspired pop which has some Madonna influences here and there. And ‘If U Seek Amy’ had me liking the cheekiness and wit behind it especially with the ‘F.U.C.K me’ alternative. It’s not really a stand-out song for me either, but then again, I was never a fan of Max Martin.
If I had to pick the standouts mine would be Circus, Kill The Lights, Mannequin, Blur, Shattered Glass and Unusual You. In part, I heard a bit of ‘Blackout’ and a couple of ‘In The Zone’ revisitations which are two of Britney’s best work. Some of the songs on this album were whimsical, modern, catchy and nicely produced but fell a bit short in comparison, whilst others displayed much of Britney’s maturity. Nice effort nonetheless.
Rating: 3/5

I can agree. 3/5 is fair and I really like “If u seek Amy”.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:55 am
I listened to this album a couple of days ago and the first thing that popped in my head was: “Would it make a difference if someone else sang these songs?” And the answer was no. Like Kelsi said, Lady GaGa would’ve owned this album.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:57 am
I would have said 2.0/5 because the production was DEFO a circus. It was all over the place.
Kill the lights was supposed to be the new Piece of me? which is a song I love.. and it didn’t work. Toya I thought you said danja said circus goes way harder then blackout? DAMN. I was expecting fierce energy. What happened to the urban album it was meant to be? what happened to darckchild? I will say I like about three songs these being circus, manequin and if u seek amy. I guess 2008 is the year of musical letdowns..
November 20th, 2008 at 10:00 am
“kill the Lights”"Circus” “Out from Under” “Blur” are the only singles from this album that are hot. I am sorry, but when you follow Blackout “Radar” “Hot as ice” “Gimmie More’ “Piece Of Me” “Why should I be Sad” “Toy Soldier” you have to really bring it.
Britney proved that she is still not ready to make her come back, and it seem like she was forced to create more music. Maybe it’s money matters, or maybe Papa Joe told her to get out there & do something constructive with her time. Either way, Britney didn’t want to step into the studio, as she used vo-coder all over this album!
The lyrics weren’t realy personal, and with everyone wanting to know what has been going on, Britney should have made this her most personal effort. It seems as if, “blackout” was telling the story of her life at the moment. With the one hot verse that created “kill the Light”, “You don’t like me I don’t like you, it don’t matter” this album was anything but personal Britney. This album truthfully was anything but Britney at all. I am all for an evolution, but ths was not what we were promised. I thought this album was going to be more urban, but it proved Britney was going back to bubble gum pop. Maybe they found out that Urban songs required more vocal capability & performance.
2.5/5
November 20th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Blackout was EXTREMELY urban and dark and MOODY to say the least which is probably why alot of us and Toya included, loved that album..Britney has actually stated herself this album is a STRAIGHT POP album..a few urban things here and there but all in all STRAIGHT pop..And She wanted this album to be just fun..not as personal as Blackout was. I liked very few of the tracks on the album..I liked Shattered Glass, Womanizer, Kill The Lights, Blur, Lace & Leather but the REAL standout for me was If You Seek Amy. Extremely clever, I never thought If You Seek Amy as a subliminal message!
I bet Britney’s gonna feel the way Kelly AND Michelle are feeling..Beyonceitis @ its best! LMAO!
I think Toya’s review was fair and with all due respect, Brit Brit came WAY harder than Beyonce with this album, but we all know who’s gonna go GOLD in this first week, don’t we?
November 20th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Toya why do you always have to bring Rihanna (little ms no talent) in between good dancers and singers… I mean please …if you dont say anything about her in Beyonces spot you will put her in Britneys…. STOP pls we all know Rihanna cant sing or dance.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:11 am
UZO u got that from the new britney interview looool

November 20th, 2008 at 10:11 am
I’d give it a 4/5. And I agree with most of what you said, but I love ‘Womanizer’. She said a few months back the album would be more urban, which I would have preffered, but the album is more pop than anything.
Standouts include: Womanizer, Circus, Kill The Lights, Mannequin, Unusual U, Blur, If U Seek Amy & Amnesia!
‘Mmm Papi’ & ‘Rock Me In’ suck.
It’s not as hot as ‘Blackout’, but I knew it wouldn’t be. But I was hoping it would be, because like Dee said, when she had songs like ‘Break The Ice’, ‘Toy Souilder’ when she was mental had me thinking she could come even harder.
I would have liked more Danja aswel. Nevermind.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I really like this album because it was a lot more balanced than blackout was. Not only did it have amazing upbeat songs (circus, kill the lights, if you seek amy, shattered glass, etc.) it also has some slow songs (my baby, out from under) and songs that are more fun (mmm papi, lace and leather). Britney seems to have put a lot more personality into this album and it shows. I love it and hope she has amazing success with it as I am sure she will.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:13 am
UZo, this was not about Beyonce, this was about Britney. That is a matter of opinion that we stans would oppose on, but….whatever..
Let’s keep this about Britney!
She didn’t come hard enough, and it’s not Bee’s fault!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I did, Carl LOL
November 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Toya, I agree with your review. “Blackout” would have been an amazing era if Britney was at the right point in her life. I do feel “Circus” is good, it has some amazing dance songs such as “Circus” & “Mannequin”. Alot of people are missing out of “Blur” too.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Beyonce didn’t do that well with her album either Dee so what are you talking about
November 20th, 2008 at 10:16 am
I am hoping this album grows on me in the coming weeks. I really support Britney & even urged everyone I knew to purchase the hottness that was “Blackout” last year. I am hoping she knows what she is doing, and brings a performance that is to die for. Something has to give.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:17 am
it deserves 4/5 and no matter how much you hate Womanizer, the masses did make it a number 1 hit, and there is only one other chicka that has done that recently LOL sorry wig crypt!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Dee, but who do you think came harder..Britney or Bee??
November 20th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Carl, as I said, this is a matter of opinions. I love Beyonce’s album & there is a balance shift. The album is what it is, and you either like it or you don’t. I love Beyonce’s album & I don’t enjoy Britneys. That’s my opinion & there is nothing left to be said!
You don’t like Beyonce’s album, oh well
Go Buy Britney’s or Brandy’s album
November 20th, 2008 at 10:20 am
DEE:
She didn’t come hard enough, and it’s not Bee’s fault!
Is that not exactly what I did so go suck on beyonce or something.
I am not buying britney, brandy or beyonce. They haven’t impressed me enough to spend money on them.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Uzo, if you are asking my opinion & I know you are going to disagree…I would say Beyonce.
I enjoyed the personal side of the album, as if gave me a clear view of what’s going on in her life.
Broken Heart Girl, Halo, That’s why You’re Beautiful, Sattelites, Ava Marie, Smash Into you…All songs were showing a vunerable woman who is now dangerously in love. She no longer wants to fall, but she is officially dangerously in love. She is now afraid of her man leaving her & makes it clear that she wants to stay in this position forever.
Diva, Video Phone,Radio,Hello,Scared of Lonely,Sweet Dreams…Explores a woman who is still independent & wants to have fun. She shows that her man is still in her life ,but she is capable of having fun. She is having fun lyrically!
I love that depending on my mood, I can shift albums & get another outlook!
I would say Beyonce’s album served 4/5
I would have loved more R&B tracks as “Hello” but I am content with the music that was given. It’s a new beyonce. You can certainly place her albums in constant rotation & hav different feels!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Carl, that is fine. Can we move along?
You don’t want to buy either’s album! That is your option. We are two different people; with different taste in music.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Are we talking about Bey? Uch. Bey’s & Britney’s albums are completely different imo. So there ain’t no point saying which is better, depends on your music taste.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:25 am
You don’t want to buy either’s album! That is your option. We are two different people; with different taste in music.
Clearly..
November 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am
I agree Nathan.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am
The Killers have leaked.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am
@ Nathan, I agree….but some folks find it hard going a day without speaking/posting/defending Beyonce.

November 20th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Oh and for the record, I just really don’t like this album cover….
November 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am
What’s your thoughts on Kanye’s album? I like it, but I dunno if it’s just the quality, but I struggle to find out what he’s saying.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am
btw beyonces album is number 3 on itunes
November 20th, 2008 at 10:29 am
you like rock nathan?
November 20th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Moe Moe, it dosen’t matter what the public chose to make number one. Laffy Taffy was number one. Does that mean that it was a classical hit? No sir!
Either way, this is Toya’s opinion on what th album deserves. If you disagree, post your review!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Not “heavy rock”, but The Killers are awesome!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Since people are posting Beyonce’s position on Itunes; let us make it clear that she is number one in japan! Congratulations Beyonce!
Now back to Britney!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Nathan I like most of Kanye’s album, Coldest Winter and Robocop are the best, but I can’t take more than one spin of it. The vocoder kills it and also makes it hard to hear what he’s saying.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:32 am

November 20th, 2008 at 10:37 am
*waves*
November 20th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Same thing with Bey’s album. I can’t play the two discs one after the other. Kanye gets 3/5 from me.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Did u buy the album Z?
November 20th, 2008 at 10:39 am
i find it funny that people are quick to give this album a 2 or 2.5 but they gave that one chick’s album a 10 out of 10 lmao
circus is way better then I AM..A Thief
i would give the album 3.7 out of 5
November 20th, 2008 at 10:41 am

I’m not loving yoooou the way I wanted tooo
DEAD, ‘Ye..
November 20th, 2008 at 10:46 am
How do you know there is a re-release in February..? I swear she is only releasing a spanish version..
November 20th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Neffe, why are you going to comment on people’s person opinion? Does it matter? If I say I like dick over pussy what are you going to kill me if you like pussy over dick? Take your weak ass over there in the corner. I don’t even know how this chick is surviving…….
Beyonce= 4.5/5
Britney=2.5/5
Kanye=TBA
Brandy=4/5
Keri Hilson=4.5/5 (when she decides to let it go)
November 20th, 2008 at 10:49 am
It’s sad… but I’m not talking about the re-release…
November 20th, 2008 at 10:51 am
so why are you waiting so long to buy it?
Brandy=4/5
Keri Hilson=4.5/5 (when she decides to let it go)
You haven’t heard them yett…
November 20th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Almost all of their albums have leaked, Carl.
And I’m not buying because it’s released in Feb here. You can be so dense sometimes…
November 20th, 2008 at 10:56 am

shut up bitch
November 20th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Jessica Mauboys LP Is Hotter Than BOTH Bey & Brits Shit
I Wanted Blackout Part 2
BTW How Can You Rate Brandy & Keri When There Albums Havent Been Heard
November 20th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I COMPLETELY disagree.
This deserves at least a 3.7-4.5. Sure it’s not perfect, but don’t give it a shitty review at a 3.
Sure it’s not as urban as blackout, and even though this is an urban blog, you still have to review an album as a whole and not based on bias.
This is without a doubt, Britney’s second if not best album. She’s ventured out and showed her emotion/growth/carisma/power.
The only track I didn’t like was Mmm Papi. There were TONS of standout tracks.
Womanizer number one
Circus
Out from Under
Kill the Lights
If U Seek Amy
Unusual You
Blur
Mannequin
and the others except for Mmm Papi NEVER fell short.
It’s your blog, but I’m just giving my opinion as to open your minds and like more songs that aren’t so “urban” like mannequin, kill the lights, and circus.
4.5/5
November 20th, 2008 at 10:58 am
And I’m not buying because it’s released in Feb here. You can be so dense sometimes…
You do know i was talking about beyonce.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:59 am
There’s A Good 9/10 Tracks We Havent Of Brandy’s Album, As For Keri….
November 20th, 2008 at 11:01 am
This album rocks!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:01 am
The only songs I really like are Shattered Glass, Kill The Lights and Womanizer. I’d give it a 1/5.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:02 am
*sighs* I know Carl… I Am Sasha Fierxe is not released in Sweden until Feb. That’s what Wiki says.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:05 am
U SAID U WERE IN THE UK! Z
November 20th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Umm… No. I’m in Sweden.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Neffe, so now I am a bitch? LMAO! Nothing you say will amuse or ever hurt me. I am going to say this, you should go lye down in the middle of the street & play in traffic!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:10 am

Not just “now”.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:26 am
TOYA HAVE U HEARD AMNESIA?? THAT SHIT ALONE WOULD MAKE ME BUY THE WHOLE DAMN ALBUM LOL! I LOVE THE OLD-SKOOL JANET BEAT AND THE SONG IS CATCHY AS HELL!
my standouts: shattered glass, kill the lights, phonography, circus, womanizer and if u seek amy. after 2 days of listen i agree blackout is better. that album is de shit!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:27 am
oh, and i love quicksand too!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:36 am
who the fuck is this jessica mauboys person?
November 20th, 2008 at 11:39 am
i haven’t heard the entire album but from what i’ve heard 3/5 seems fair…i’ll hit y’all back on Dec 2nd…
November 20th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Its this not a upgrade…its the same olde bullshit from Britney……3/5…..hell no more of 2/5….Toya your gave Beyonce a 3/5…you are telling me that the album is at the same level…..”Dissapear” outshines everything on Briney album….
November 20th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
IDK, I might listen to the album but I just dont fuck with Britney and Womanizer is TRASH!
November 20th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Id give it a 1.8/5. I only like If U Seek Amy and Kill the Lights. Womanzier and Circus are tolerable but nothing special.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
ANOTHER AMAZING REVIEW!GOOD JOB TOYA!U ARE ALWAYS SO OBJECTIVE AND TRUE!LOVE YOU!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
LOL @ Beyonce for her album being #3 on Itunes….
November 20th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
LOL @ Beyonce for going gold in her 1st week
November 20th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Circus is amazing. You’re crazy.
Rock Me In is NOT filler, i LOVE that song.
Mmm Papi is a grower, the only one on the album. And now I like it, it makes me want to do the mash potatoe lol.
Circus 4.5/5
November 20th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Urban & Slim….Did you forget to keep your user name the same. You did the same yesterday when you replied about working in Target under Urban, but posted the comment under another username. You are pathetic! Nashville Junkie..LOL
November 20th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I compeletely disagree with you Toya. I just listened to Blackout and Circus and I say Circus is way better and why?
1. she sings with emotion
2. she shows how much she has grown
3. the lyrics are way better
the songs sound better, not all of them, i still miss gimme more and break the ice here, but ti’s a compeletely different album.
the only songs I don’t like are Mmmm papi, well it is a fun song, but not great, lace and leather is ok, i HATE blur and the rest are all standouts especially AMNESIA, i HAVE THAT SONG ON REPEAT!
She shows great vocals in out From under and My Baby, but I still mis her, she need to let it out, cause I KNOW she has a voice we haven’t heard, she has it her voice can not be gone if you look ate her video’s before she was famous.
the dance tracks Çircus, Kill The Lights and Mannequin are just awesome and unusual you sounds soooo relaxing, love them all.
I say her best work to date and as Danja announces THE QUEEN OF POP.
and to bring up the Beyonce comparison, I don’t see the point giving Beyonce 3/5 and Britney 3/5 in my opinion this album is WAAAAY better and I’s give Circus:
4,5/5
November 20th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
i GIVE Circus 2/5, to be kind.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Dee what are u talking about? My post was in response to Urban Livin. He thought it funny that she slipped to 3 on Itune so I pointed out that it doesnt matter because she’s still going gold in her 1st week.
Dont associate me with Urban Livin.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Hmmm, I’ll say the album get’s a 4.5, 5/5. I honestly don’t care what people say about my rating, cause this is my opinion therefore I can give it what I honestly want. And no, I’m not giving her a high score just because I love pop music, and have been a stan of her since the 90’s, but because this album ACTUALLY deserves the score.
Every song tells a different story, even if there isn’t depth, which Britney never had much, but nonetheless delivered an excellent album. I love all the songs, and the one’s I love the most are Circus, Out from Under, Kill the Lights, Shattered Glass, If U Seek Amy, Unusual You, Blur, Lace and Leather, Phonography, Amnesia, Quicksand and Trouble. Basically, every song. Once again, say whatever you would like about my score, I don’t care.
My singles list for Circus would be:
Womanizer
Circus
If U Seek Amy
Mannequin
Blur
Kill the Lights
Unusual You
Out from Under
And yes, this album and Blackout are on the same level in my opinion, maybe not production wise or vocally, but just overall and lyrically.

November 20th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
^^^^^ Such a powerful voice comming out of that little frame. Wow! Thats all I can say!
November 20th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
im sry in my opinion, even tho this album and i am are totally different, as far as a better put together album, i think circus surpasses i am. i think it should get a 3.5, but w/e.
i like most of the stand outs you guys named and i LOVE lace and leather.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Um……i would give this album a 2.5/5, mainly because of the production, but everything else was all over the place. plus overuse of auto tune on voice didn’t make it listenable. forgettable and repetitive
November 20th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
November 20th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
k.b….there were most of the album wasnt auto tuned, what are you talking about?
by the way toya, i would definitely say that lace and leather would be more inspired by prince. madonna hasnt done anything this funky….she came close to it on some hard candy songs.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:16 am
At first, I said it was better than Blackout….then after a few listens, I learned that they can’t be compared. They are on the same level in two different genres.
Standouts:
-Circus (Amazing new sound for Britney)
-Out from Under (HUGE hit potential)
-Kill The Lights
-Shattered Glass (Too short!)
-IF U SEEK AMY (Best BRITNEY TRACK EVER IMO)
Once again… if Britney had never released “Blackout” and saved it for one complete comeback, it would’ve been straight fire!
Gimme more
Circus
Womanizer
Out from under
Unusual you
Get naked
If you seek amy
Shattered glass
Toy soldier
Freakshow
My baby
Radar
^Would’ve went DIAMOND in 2 weeks. Lol
November 21st, 2008 at 7:42 am

anonymous what the hell are u saying?? britney have out sold each of beyonce albums domestically and internationally with each of her albums, so it won’t be a stretch if it happened now.

I really like If you see Amy, Unusual you (can’t stop listening to it), Circus the best. The thing I like is that it sounds organic, like an authentic song whereas Beyonce sounds opportunistic, like sheis just doing the ballads to crossover and she oversings! She needs to learn that less is more.

shes brillians , dont care what you say.
i have never been a fan of her till this album,
if you dont get anything from them, listen to them a couple more times, they grow on u trust me.
also, i never payed attention to her bubble gum pop or her blackout album, the only one song that was worth listning to from her old days was toxic.
the lyrics are alot more witty, and instead of random groans there are words.
my absolute fav is rock me in.

its so fun and alive, a brilliant piece of work and the lyrics are so sweet aswell
